Adding the crunch to your salad and the perfect topping to your soup, croutons are a fun creation. We make them with bread, olive oil, garlic salt, and parsley. But here’s the fun part: you can use your own spices!

If you like garlic powder, rosemary, or thyme, you can enjoy them with these croutons. The spices you use are up to you. My favorite recipe to use these on is this Healthy Cauliflower Soup.

This recipe for croutons is so easy to make, you’ll have ready croutons in no time. If you have stale bread and don’t know what to do with it, think about this quick and easy recipe! Croutons keep for a long time so it’s great to have some on hand to top your soup, caesar salad, or just to snack on.

Keep a sustainable kitchen with croutons!

Croutons are a great way to reduce waste in the home, especially in your kitchen. Using all of your ingredients before they go bad can be quite the challenge. Making homemade croutons from stale bread is a great way to get the most use from every ingredient!

To use more ingredients, feel free to toss the bread in grated parmesan cheese just before baking. The cheesy crisp will add flavor to your salads and soups, or just regular snacks.

Key Ingredients:

Croutons ingredients: bread, olive oil, garlic salt, and dried parsley.

A few slices of old bread do the trick for this super easy recipe. Whether it’s sandwich bread, hot dog buns, or a whole loaf of bread you forgot.

Olive oil for flavor. I recommend using high-quality olive oil, or melted butter as a rich alternative.

Garlic salt to simplify the seasoning process: both garlic and salt in one container!

Dried parsley, or any of your favorite herbs to add delicious flavors.

Expert Tips:

  • Customize the herbs to your taste. Use dried herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, or dried rosemary if you’d like. I do not recommend using fresh herbs, dried herbs will bake better for croutons.
  • For some extra flavor, use sourdough bread to make sourdough croutons! They will add a fun twist to your soups and salads.
  • Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil for a rich taste and a golden, crispy finish on the croutons.
  • Use a garlic-infused oil for more flavor in these croutons! Feel free to toss in a little bit of chili oil for spice, or other flavors you like.
  • Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on the baking sheet to avoid overcrowding, ensuring each crouton gets crispy.
  • Allow the croutons to cool on the baking sheet after removing them from the oven; this helps them become even crunchier.
  • Make gluten free croutons out of gluten free bread all the same with this recipe!

Recipe FAQs

What herbs pair well with these croutons?

Dried parsley, thyme, rosemary, and oregano are popular choices, but feel free to experiment with your favorite herbs.

How do I prevent croutons from becoming too hard?

Keep an eye on the baking time. Check on the croutons after 15 minutes, then once more at the 20 minute mark. Remove from the oven when they are golden brown but not overly hard.

Should I season the croutons before or after baking?

Seasoning before baking ensures the flavors penetrate the croutons. But a light sprinkle of additional herbs after baking can enhance the fresh flavors!
