Homemade Garlic Naan Bread

This homemade garlic naan bread is truly delicious and it’s so easy to make! You throw all of the naan ingredients in a bowl to make the dough, and then cook it on your skillet within a few minutes! Soon you’ll be eating soft and buttery garlic naan bread with a flavorful curry or your favorite dip.

The Best Homemade Garlic Naan Recipe

Naan bread is pillowy soft, chewy, and delicious! If you’ve never heard of it before, I’m so glad I get to introduce you to this amazing bread. This bread is so good that it’s been around in East Asia (it’s typically eaten in Indian cuisine) since the ancient times and we’re still loving it today. 

Typically naan is meant to be pulled apart into smaller pieces so you can use it to scoop up food like curry or masala and then pop it into your mouth with each bite. It’s delicious this way and I absolutely recommend you try it! However, you can also use it in many other ways that we’ll talk about below. 

Today’s garlic naan is so soft due to the yogurt that’s mixed in, and while many people like to search for recipes with no yeast, I can assure you this one is simple! There’s no fuss – you’re going to be amazed by how easy it is to make this bread!

Garlic Butter Naan Ingredients

This recipe is so easy to make and it’s all due to the simple ingredients! And don’t worry, the yeast is not your enemy. I’ll show you how to make this yummy garlic naan bread with such minimal effort. 

  • All-Purpose Flour– I like to use the King Arthur All purpose flour for this recipe.
  • Active Dry Yeast– Can be found in most grocery stores.
  • Salt– Sea salt
  • Warm water– Make sure it’s warm!
  • Sugar– cane fine sugar.
  • Yogurt– I use Greek whole milk yogurt, but you can use any that you like.
  • Oil – I used olive oil

Garlic Naan Toppings

  • Unsalted Butter – melted
  • Garlic – minced
  • Parsley – chopped

The toppings are optional. Sometimes I just brush a little of melted butter, when serving with a simple homemade hummus. For pasta, I like to use the garlic and fresh chopped parsley along with melted butter.

How to Make Homemade Naan Bread

Step 1: Mix Dough Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, yeast, warm water, yogurt, and oil.

Step 2: Knead Dough

Mix the ingredients together to form a soft dough. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a little more flour, but don’t overdo it or it will dry out. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 3: Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl covered with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 4: Section the Dough

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

Step 5: Shape Into Naan

On a floured surface, roll out each ball into an 8” circle.

Step 6: Cook Naan

Heat up a skillet over high heat and cook each naan for about 1-2 minutes on each side, until it puffs up and gets brown spots.

Step 7: Make Garlic Butter

In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and minced garlic. As soon as the naan comes out of the oven or skillet, brush the tops with the garlic butter mixture.

Step 8: Garnish and Enjoy

Sprinkle chopped parsley and enjoy!

Do I need to refrigerate naan?

No, you do not need to refrigerate naan. In fact, you should avoid it at all costs because refrigerating it will dry it out. To save your leftover naan, put it in an air-tight container and leave it at room temperature for up to a few days. You could also freeze the naan in an airtight container and thaw it for later use. 

How do you eat naan?

In Indian culture, it’s eaten by tearing off small pieces and using the naan and your fingers to scoop up food and pop it in your mouth. 

Is pita bread the same as naan?

No pita and naan are not the same thing. Naan recipes call for dairy products which makes it softer than pita.

How do you reheat naan?

The key is to not overheat it and to make sure you add moisture. You can microwave it by wrapping it in a damp paper towel and microwaving it for 30 seconds. You could also put it in the oven at a lower temperature (300-350F) and wrap it in foil to create steam and therefore, moisture. If you reheat it on the stovetop, you can add a little oil to a low-medium heated skillet and place the naan in there covered and/or sprinkled with a little water to create steam. Finally, you can add it to the air fryer with a brush of butter or a sprinkle of water. The best thing you can do when reheating naan is to watch it closely – you don’t want dried-out naan.
